About Me

Karl Newsom Edwards is a children’s picture book author and illustrator. Born in Oakland, California, he is a graduate of the California College of the Arts with a degree in drawing. 

He made his debut as an author/illustrator with Fly! (Knopf, 2015).

I Got a New Friend is his second book as an author/illustrator published by Knopf and scheduled for release summer of 2017. Other books in the pipeline include The Hugely Wugely Spider, written by Ethan Berlin and published by Farrar Straus Giroux Books for Young Readers with a release date of spring 2018. Poison, written by Sarah Albee, is scheduled to be released next year by Random House.

A long-time illustrator, his books include Er-lang and the Seven Suns by Tony Guo and Euphony Cheung, the Edgar-award winning Sammy Keyes series by Wendelin Van Draanen, and 2011 Newbery Honor book The New Kid by Mavis Jukes. 

Karl is involved with the Yell and Tell Foundation, a child safety advocacy nonprofit. He is also a veteran graphics and headbadge designer for the bicycle industry. He toured and raced in Europe and Japan on an original 1887 Victorian highwheel bicycle he restored. Karl lives in Portland, Oregon.
