My venture into children's books is really what this site is all about. My latest, I Got a New Friend will be released in the spring of 2017, and is published by Knopf. It received a starred review by Kirkus.
Fly!, my first author/illustrator book, was published spring of 2015, also by Knopf.
I recently illustrated The Hugely Wugely Spider, written by Ethan Berlin. This is to be released by Farrar Straus and Giroux spring of 2018, and I just completed illustrating Poison, a nonfiction book for tweens by Sarah Albee and published by Random House.
Other books are in the works.
The Sammy Keyes series was great fun. Working for the folks at Random House, we explored a new, edgy line quality and strong color.
The New Kid, also a Random House book, explored a more casual, line quality.
Er-lang and the Suns is an oldie but a goodie.
This portfolio is devoted to children's book illustration. My commercial advertising site can be viewed at www.karledwards.com.
Every children's book calls for its own style of illustration. Some stories require bold, strong images while others require a softer touch. My emphasis is on the quirky, humorous approach. I find it fun to change gears depending on the mood of the story, whether I am the author or I'm illustrating another person's story.
It's all good.
More often than not, the process of sketching is to create new characters. I have a fuzzy idea of what I think I want the character to look like, but until it is on paper, with subtle changes in the body posture, the eye placement or the line quality, I really don't know. I guess I have to see it to know if it works or not.
It is not only a process of process, but it is the process of self-discovery once the lines have been drawn.
